Paralympic Day - 28/06/17
To kick start our day, we were privileged to have a special guest, Andy McErlean, come and speak to the whole school. Andy, a former soldier and multiple gold and silver medalist of the Invictus Games 2016, came to share his story with us, giving us a better rounded understanding of Paralympics and inspiring us to dream dreams, achieve the impossible and be 'the masters of our fate'.
Across the school, children were demonstrating excellent sportsmanship as well as exercising the Paralympic qualities - courage, determination, inspiration and equality.
Throughout the day we saw children having a go at seated volley ball, seated netball, wheelchair basketball and blind football. Children even took part in their 'daily mile' from the perspective of someone who would have lost their sight or a leg. Children adapted existing sports and even created new sports with different variations that would assist those with differing abilities.
Towards the end of the day, there was time to reflect on the activities of our focus day, looking back at the Paralympic values and seeing how we as a school can demonstrate these in our day to day.
Will YOU be the master of your fate?
In Key Stage 1, the children were trying to experience doing some tasks without their dominant hand or in some cases without the use of either arms. These are the photos of some children attempting to complete a wordsearch:
