Year 5

Welcome to Spring Term 2016

To the Moon and Back

Our Year 5 topic this term is ‘To the Moon and Back’. We will introduce the topic by following Tim Peake’s current mission into space and we will be becoming ‘space detectives’ as we find out more!

In our English lessons we will begin by exploring and writing stories of mystery and suspense, followed by biographies, including those of people who have travelled through space. We’ll be writing recounts, as well as becoming journalists, ending the term with an opportunity to become news reporters on Flying Bull Radio!

We will be using our Maths lessons to look at Geometry: properties of shape and position and direction, linking this to the movement of planets and spacecraft. We will then move on to statistics, fractions, decimals and percentages, again linked to our space detective work.

In Science we will be exploring our place in the universe and will then move on to investigating different forces

In History and Geography we’ll be finding out about how Britain has changed and developed since the end of the Second World War, as well as developing our map skills. Following on from this, we will have a fun-packed Design and Technology day, in which we will be finding out about and cooking food on a ration!

Through our Art programme of study we will be studying and creating our own art work, taking inspiration from Andi Warhol. We will be listening to and creating our own pieces of music from a similar era as we get inspired by reggae in Music lessons.

In Languages, children will have the opportunity to continue learning both French and Spanish, looking at food and the story of the hungry caterpillar.

We are looking forward to developing our knowledge and skills in coding in our Computing lessons, mostly using Scratch to create space-based computer games.

Within our PSHCE scheme of work, we will be looking at alcohol and its effects, followed by exploring identities in the UK and recognising and challenging stereotypes.

Finally, in PE lessons we are going to be developing gymnastics, social skills and outdoor adventure activities.

Please make sure that PE kits are in school at the beginning of each week. PE lessons will be on Mondays and Tuesdays. Also, a quick reminder to read with your child at least three times a week and continue to support them with learning log tasks.

We are looking forward to an exciting spring term, packed with new learning and experiences, with the possibility of some ‘out of this earth’ trips to bring our topic to life!

Welcome to Autumn Term 2015

Fairtrade and Sustainability

Our Year 5 topic this term is Fairtrade and Sustainability. We will introduce the topic with a trip to Sainsbury’s to find out about Fairtrade products and a visit to Tuppenny Barn where we will learn about sustainability, harvesting and cooking our own food.

In our English lessons we will begin by exploring and writing poetry that conveys images, followed by persuasive writing, letter writing and explanation texts linked to our Fairtrade topic.

We will be using our Maths lessons to look at Fairtrade statistics, using money, measures, fractions, decimals and percentages to fundraise and create our own Fairtrade Christmas market stall, as well as improving our knowledge and use of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through problem solving.

We will investigate reversible and irreversible changes in our Science curriculum, linking again to Fairtrade. In History and Geography we’ll be finding out where Fairtrade products come from, using map skills, looking at weather and climate and learning about the history of trade between Britain and other countries.

We will present some of our Fairtrade research using multi-media software and apps in Computing, such as ‘Explain Everything’ and ‘Comic Life’. We will also be looking at how to communicate safely online. This will link to our PSHCE scheme of work, in which we’ll be exploring interpersonal skills online, how to challenge others respectfully and economic choices and sustainability.

We’ll be producing items to sell at our Fairtrade stall in DT and Art, through baking, making Fairtrade bags and using recycled materials to make our own Christmas cards. We will also be designing and evaluating our own Fairtrade logos and clothing designs.

We have a fun Music programme of study to look forward to, as we’ll be composing and performing percussion pieces using junk material. In Languages, children will have the opportunity to continue learning both French and Spanish, looking at introductions and food.

Finally, in PE lessons we are going to be developing ball skills, invasion games, balances and dance.

Please make sure that PE kits are in school at the beginning of each week. PE lessons will be on Mondays and Tuesdays. Also, a quick reminder to read with your child at least three times a week and continue to support them with learning log tasks.

We are looking forward to an exciting autumn term, packed with new learning and experiences!

Summer Term 2015 – ‘Fit For Five’

Our Summer term topic is based around Fit For Five.

We will be learning about healthy lifestyles and the benefits of keeping healthy. We will look at healthy ways of eating and exercise. This will also link in with our PE for Gymnastics.

Alongside this, we are hoping to include an activity based trip to encourage team work.

The children will be developing their reading comprehension skills in order to prepare them for Year 6 and in writing we will be focusing on non-chronological reports, explanations and fables.

In Maths, children will continue to improve their mental maths skills using CLIC maths, as well as following key objectives such as shape, statistics and word problems using all four operations. They will be developing their written and mental calculations, as well as problem solving abilities.

In R.E., we will be learning about the Eucharist and Faith (Jesus’ Messages.) This will aid our Community Cohesion work and help us to better understand the society within which we live.

In Art and DT, we will be studying still life drawings and painting and constructing 3D structures

In Music we will be continuing our junk percussion and creating raps linked to our Fit For Five.

The children will also be learning about health and well being, including substance misuse, bacteria and viruses and relationships.

As always any support you can give your child at home is much appreciated.

Thank you to all parents and carers, who have supported their child with their learning logs. Please continue to do so as we know your child appreciates it. We would also love to see as many parents and carers as possible at our Thursday E.R.I.C reading sessions – this is simply a session to hear your children reading. It runs every Thursday from 08:45 to 09:15.

Can we also remind you that 5B/5T need PE kits on Wednesdays and Thursdays?

As always, thank you for your continued support, if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact us in person or through email.

Spring Term 2015 – Fair Trade

Our main topic for this term is ‘Fair Trade’. We will be looking at which countries different products come from, exploring how they are produced and what Fair Trade means in relation to these products. We will be learning about how climate affects the things we grow and the differences between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

We will be linking our DT and Art topics to this by creating our own Fair Trade logos and creating our own T-shirt designs from this.

In P4C, we will be discussing the benefits of Fair Trade.

In music, once again, linking in with Fair Trade, we will be creating music with junk percussion.

In English we will be covering poetry, significant authors, using Treasure Island as a base for our study, persuasive writing and instructions.

Following on from their successful work and concert singing in French and English about the D-Day landings commemorating the 70th Anniversary at the beginning of the year, a group of 22 year 5 children visited Caen last week.

We left early on Sunday 12th October from Portsmouth on the ferry and returned late on Thursday 16th October, after a successful 4 days of rehearsals and concerts, with a little fun in between!

The children were brilliant ambassadors for the school. They sang in 4 concerts, some to French school children and others to the Mayor and other dignitaries from Caen. Everyone was very impressed with how they performed and many adults had tears in their eyes. They are continuing to have contact with the children from Puit Picards primary school, (who they performed with).

On the ferry home, Mrs. Cantini, Mrs. Brazier, Mrs. Adams and Mr. Way were approached by several members of the public to compliment the children on their behaviour and consideration for other people travelling.  We are very proud of them in so many ways!
