Creatures – Spring 1
Happy New Year from the Year R team!
We hope you had a great Christmas break. We are really excited to start 2016 with our new topic ‘Creatures’.
This term we will be welcoming different animals into our Reception classes. The children will meet a variety of creatures and will find out about how to care for them. In English, we will be focusing on animal stories and information texts linked to animals. We will also continue to develop our sentence writing skills.
In Maths, we will be looking at addition, subtraction, measures and money.
We can’t wait to get started!

Welcome to another exciting half term in Year R!
This half term the first four weeks of learning will focus on Space. The children will explore the solar system through song, dance, ICT, play, art and discussion. We will be developing our skills in caption writing and labelling. Alongside this we will be continuing to learn new graphemes and phonemes in phonics.
In week four we will begin a short topic based around Celebrations, this will of course culminate in our Christmas nativity performance. We look forward to seeing you there!

Healthy Food – Autumn 1
This half term in Reception the children will be learning all about healthy food. The purpose of our learning will be to understand how to keep ourselves fit and healthy. This will include a trip to a local supermarket to explore various types of healthy food. The children will be encouraged to try different foods and share their experiences as a class.
In phonics we will be beginning to look at letters and sounds, starting with s a t p i n. The children will explore letters, sounds and letter formation in the first half term. In English our focus will be list making, letter formation, word building and story telling all tied together within our healthy food theme.
In Maths we will be concentrating on number recognition, touch counting, quantities and 2D shapes.
We are really excited about the half term ahead and look forward to getting to know you and your children.

Summer 2015
Under the Sea
Our action packed topic this term is ‘Under the Sea’.
We will be providing lots of exciting opportunities/activities with creative curriculum links. These will include; investigating floating and sinking, designing and building boats, exploring the beach and creatures that live in our ocean and how we can all protect our environment. Other activities will include role playing as Pirates, making treasure maps, writing messages in a bottle and singing sea shanties. We will be exploring textures and patterns, throughout this topic.
We envisage many great opportunities for your child to share their learning with you and we are planning a trip in early May, to the Blue Reef Aquarium.

Spring 2015
In Year R we are looking at how we care for animals, with an emphasis on pet care. The children have been finding out about their needs and what happens at the vets. Later this term we are bringing in some pets for the children to learn more about and handle.
In the second half of the term we will be studying life cycles and this will incorporate a trip to Staunton Country Park. We will also be incubating and hatching some chicks in the classroom!
We are very excited about this term and we are sure the children will gain a lot from these experiences as they have shown great enthusiasm for this topic.
